Field Notes
Stochastic Extremes in Quiet Summer Ranges
Thin summer volume makes stochastic oscillators chatter. A field note from a San Chung clinic evening.
Last July’s indicator clinic filled with charts from names that barely moved for three weeks. Stochastic lines whipped between extremes while price scraped sideways. Several attendees had taken every “oversold” bounce and paid for it in commissions and mood.
Range first, oscillator second
We spent forty minutes drawing the range highs and lows before plotting %K and %D. Once the box was visible, the stochastic chatter looked like what it was: noise inside boundaries, not a series of reversals.
ADX as the quiet judge
Almost every chart that evening printed ADX below 18. That single filter would have kept most of the room out of the chatter trades. Momentum indicators are not broken in ranges; they are simply answering a question that does not pay well when trend strength is absent.
Bring one stuck chart
Clinics work when each person arrives with one annotated sheet and one sentence of confusion. Bring five unmarked screenshots and the evening dissolves into browsing.
